KINDERGARTEN...MEET KHYRI!

August 4, 2014 at 7:50am Khyri begins his first day of Kindergarten.

Let's look at that again... 7:50am... ummm the Mosleys struggled with getting Khyri to Pre-Kindergarten on time at 8:30am... this "real school" thing is a bit much! ahahhahaha but we can do it :-)

The whole night before I was up crying and pacing because I was very anxious about Khyri starting school. Luckily my homie #1 Ukindra talked me back from the ledge. I called her at 11:30pm and was like, "are you up!?!" ahahhaha After 5 minutes of trying to figure out why on earth I was calling her - again today, she heard me blowing my nose. She said, "Are you crying?" uhhhhh. "Yes I've been crying for the last 2 hours" bwuwaahahhaha. A little back history - I. don't. cry. I don't even like listening or seeing other people cry. So if I'm crying it means everything has come to head and I am completely overwhelmed. ahahahahhaha. She asked me what was wrong and I spiraled into a long rant about Khyri going to the bathroom alone and being "pants" at the urinal or him walking into the cafeteria and nervously looking around to find a seat by a friendly face. Ukindra brought me back to reality.... she was like this is kindergarten - not prison! hahahahah. We chatted for about an hour and then I calmed down enough to fall asleep - well rest my eyes. ahhhhh the comfort of good friends!

I swear I woke up every hour on the hour. I don't' even know why I was in pajamas; it was a waste of a clothing change. The hubby and I officially rose at 6:15am because we did not want to be late on day one. Day two maybe... but not day one :-) So After the alarm went off, hubby and I split up duties - he focused on Kielle and I focused on Khyri. The kiddos were dressed in 20 minutes flat. While they were brushing their teeth, I went downstairs and put together Khyri's lunch. This is my first time packing an actual lunchbox, so I was kind of nervous. I mean, really, I didn't want to set Khyri up as "the kid that has the nasty lunch all the time" ahahhaha. Cafeteria talk is real! My friend Danielle, who is a packed lunch professional, suggested that I aim to include four things daily - sandwich, drink, starch (chips/crackers), and a fruit or vegetable. For day one I put together a turkey and cheese sandwich, grapes and blueberries, a juicebox, and cheezit crackers. Not bad. Every container in the lunch box is labeled so hopefully this will last us the whole year and come back home each night.

For breakfast, I cooked some turkey bacon and gave the kids their choice of cereal. Kielle chose Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Khyri chose Kix.They topped off their breakfast with a tall glass of orange juice. While at the table, both of them could not believe that they were "up before the sun". Kielle said, "Mommy the sun isn't up, so we should be sleeping." Khyri said, "You're right Kielle. Mommy made a mistake." I swear he talks like I am just dumb as rocks sometimes! a mess. After chuckling a bit, and slyly rolling my eyes at Khyri, I said, "The sun will be up before we get to school." They both gave me the side eye.

After breakfast, the munchkins put on their shoes and grabbed their book bags. The sun still hadn't come up and I truly believe they thought I was lying. ahahahhahah. It was a battle, but I was able to snap a picture of the two of them with their book bags on, ready for school.

They still don't believe me!
We all piled into the car and headed over to the elementary school. One of the main reasons we moved to this new house was so that the children could go to this particular school. It has everything we want - a diverse student body, good test scores, excellent teachers, tons of extracurricular enrichment activities for the students, and great parent involvement. It's also only 7 minutes away! woot woot! So we loaded into the car and headed out.

As always, Khyri rolled into his new school reading a book! His new obsession is dinosaurs.

The school parking lot was jam packed at 7:30am. There were cars everywhere. We had to park illegally on somebody's front lawn and walk about a block and a half to the school. We has met Khyri's teach Mrs. Denney the week before at Sneak-A-Peek. This mini open house allows the students to meet their teachers and see where their classrooms are. As well, parents hand in the school supplies and purchase school spirit wear at Sneak-A Peek.

For the first week, each kindergartener, and maybe 1st graders, got a sticker name tag that identified them and noted which teacher was theirs. This was in case some little person got side tracked and ended up in the cafeteria instead of their homeroom :-)

Kielle was excited to walk Khyri to his new classroom. I think she thought she was starting Kindergarten too! Khyri paused a little in front of his new classroom, but since we had seen it on Thursday, he knew exactly where his seat was. This is where I started to get misty eyed; he's a big boy now its official! He had actually crossed the threshold into adult world... ok ok.. kindergarten world... but in my mind... Khyri was heading off to college next week.

I watched him from outside the classroom put away his book bag and then the three of us backed away slowly. I felt the tears come down, but there were so many kids in the hall I didn't want them to start asking their parents, "What's wrong with that grown lady!?!?" ahahahaha so I did quick wipes and moved towards the car. I wasn't the only one sad though; Kielle took it rough also...

After I dropped off Kielle in her new preschool class, I went home and fell out. It was just too much emotion for me in one day; I was exhausted. I slept for awhile and then went to my scheduled doctors appointment. Everything is looking good for Cinco, but I gotta admit I was a little worried that all the stress would maybe spur me into labor; I was ok though.

School lets out at 2:20pm and I was in the carpool lane at 2:10pm :-) Let me tell you carpool is serious. I've never had experience with carpool - I mean in NYC I was on the train everyday, no school bus, no carpool. This is a photo I snapped while I was waiting.

The school is located on a small residential street. There is one lane of traffic each way. The carpool takes up the whole street. I feel bad for anyone living on that street during the school year. Its crazy!
When I finally got my boy he was super excited about his first day :-) To celebrate, we went to Barnes and Nobles. We stayed there for about an hour perusing the bookshelves and picking some good reads for the next couple of weeks.

Then we came back to the house and looked in his book bag. Somehow I ended up having more "homework" than Khyri!

After I filled out all the necessary forms, read all the info guides, posted the school calendar on the refrigerator and reviewed the classroom handbook, Khyri and I set about making his lunch for the next day. This time, Khyri opted for peanut butter and jelly :-)

As usual, I let my mind get the best of me and I was petrified of Khyri's first day.... and then, as usual, Khyri proved that he is more than capable of growing up and moving onto the next "phase" of his life. *le sigh* Why do I have a feeling these milestones are not gonna get any easier for me!?!?!?

As sure as the sun comes up each and every day, my children are growing... and I'm LOVING it!
